Looking for a colorful and super-easy DIY project that kids will love? Dip-dyeing marshmallows is a perfect little craft that doubles as a sweet treat! With just a few simple supplies, you can turn plain white marshmallows into a rainbow of fun colors.

They’re perfect for parties, hot chocolate toppings, dessert boards, or just a fun weekend activity.

READ ON TO LEARN HOW TO DYE MARSHMALLOWS

What You’ll Need

  • 1 package of large marshmallows
  • Food coloring (I used McCormick Food and Egg Coloring Dye)
  • Water
  • Small bowls or cups for each color
  • Wax paper or a non-absorbing surface for drying
  • Toothpicks or skewers (optional, makes dipping easier)

Step 1: Prepare Your Colors

Start by mixing your colors in separate bowls. Use about ½ cup of water per color and add drops of food coloring to reach your desired shade. Here are some fun color combinations you can try:

  • Dusty Rose: 14 drops of red + 6 drops of blue
  • Orange Sunset: 17 drops of yellow + 3 drops of red
  • Lime Green: 17 drops of yellow + 5 drops of green
  • Lavender Purple: 15 drops of blue + 5 drops of red

Feel free to experiment and create your own custom colors—mixing a few shades can give a beautiful ombré effect!

Step 2: Dip the Marshmallows

For easy dipping, you can skewer each marshmallow with a toothpick or small skewer. Dip each marshmallow into the color of your choice, rolling or turning it to coat evenly. If you like, you can dip only part of the marshmallow to create a fun two-toned look.

Step 3: Let Them Dry

Place the dipped marshmallows on wax paper or another non-absorbing surface to dry. Depending on the thickness of the color, drying usually takes 10–15 minutes. Be careful not to pile them together while wet, or they may stick.

Tips for Success

  • Use gel or concentrated food coloring for brighter, more vivid marshmallows.
  • Keep colors separate—use a clean toothpick or spoon for each color to avoid mixing.
  • Try creative combinations—rainbow, pastel, or even holiday-themed colors can make your marshmallows extra special.
  • Great for kids’ projects—this activity is simple, fun, and safe for little hands.

Fun Ways to Use Your Dyed Marshmallows

  • Top hot chocolate for a colorful twist
  • Decorate cupcakes or cakes
  • Arrange on a dessert board or party platter
  • Make marshmallow skewers for a fun snack

Dip-dyeing marshmallows is simple, colorful, and a little bit magical—perfect for kids and adults alike. Happy dip-dying!
