If you’re planning a nighttime birthday party and want that wow factor without spending hours crafting, these DIY cupcake toppers that glow are one of the easiest party upgrades I’ve ever made.
We celebrated my daughter’s third birthday with a “Let’s Glow Crazy” theme, complete with a beach bonfire party and every glowing detail I could dream up.
I wanted a festive topper for her mini cupcakes that would stand out after sunset as we passed them around—without turning into a complicated DIY project.
These glowing cupcake toppers were the perfect solution and came together in about an hour for roughly 50–60 cupcakes.
HOw to make DIY Cupcake Toppers That Glow
Glowing Cupcake Toppers Are Perfect for Night Parties
Any party that happens after dark—bonfires, backyard birthdays, camping parties, glow-themed celebrations—can benefit from a little light.
These cupcake toppers instantly made our party glow (literally), and the kids were obsessed.
Even better? The LED lights lasted more than a week after the party. We turned them on just before passing out the cupcakes, and they were still glowing a week later!
What You Need FOR DIY Cupcake TopperS THAT GLOW
I kept this DIY super simple. All are easy to grab on Amazon, which made this a perfect last-minute party idea. Here’s everything I used:
- Tiny LED ball lights (I used these multi-colored LED balloon lights)
- Confetti cupcake toppers (I used these sparkly tinsel toppers)
- Hot glue gun (I'm obsessed with my new cordless glue gun)
(You also might be interested in these mini cupcake boxes to transport your cupcakes.)
HOW TO MAKE GLOWING CUPCAKE TOPPERS
- Use a hot glue gun to add a small dot of glue to the back or base of each light.
- Attach the light directly to the cupcake topper. Tip: I tucked the LED light up into the bulk of the tinsel, gluing it where the strands were thickest so it looked like it was glowing from inside the topper.
- Hold in place and let cool for about 30 seconds.
- Right before serving, pull the little LED light paper tab that activates the light.
- Stick toppers into cupcakes.
- Serve and enjoy!
That’s it. No measuring, no cutting, no stress.
The Unexpected Bonus: Kids Played With Them All Night
After the cupcakes were eaten, the fun didn’t stop. Guests loved wearing the glowing toppers in their hair like fun little accessories, and the kids spent the rest of the evening building tiny glowing villages in the sand around the bonfire.
It turned into open-ended play, party favors, and decor all in one—and honestly, that’s my favorite kind of party win.
Perfect for More Than Just Birthdays
While these were a hit at our beach bonfire birthday, this idea works beautifully for:
- Glow parties
- Summer night BBQs
- Camping birthdays
- Backyard movie nights
- Fairy or magical princess parties
- Outer space / galaxy parties
- Beach or pool parties
- Backyard movie nights

- Christmas or Hanukkah night desserts
- New Year’s Eve celebrations with sparkly desserts
- Sleepover parties
- Nighttime scavenger hunts
- Weddings with an evening dessert table
- Engagement parties or anniversary dinners
- Surprise proposal or intimate night celebration desserts
If you’re looking for a high-impact, low-effort party idea, glowing cupcake toppers add instant magic—especially once the sun goes down.
